IMO MARPOL Annex VI – Introduction of the MARPOL surcharge from 1.1.2015

The MARPOL (Marpol 73/78) was founded by the UN Maritime Organization. It’s goal is to sink the sulfur emissions from fuel consumption in shipping from currently 4,5% to maximum 1,5%.

The UNO considered the Baltic Sea as an specially affected area, therefore the provisions of the convention apply to any shipping.

By the decision of the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) in 2008, SECAs (Sulphur Emission Control Access) maximum allowed sulfur percentage, which currently is 1%, has to be reduced to 0,1% by 1st January 2015. Due to the change, many costs occur for the Operators to reorganize and pay the fees, which they transfer to the customer.

To cover the additional costs, the operators are going to introduce an additional MARPOL surcharge for every ship and route. The amount of the surcharge will be defined by the current price difference between Fuel 1,0% and the applicable MGO 0,1% and is going to be adjusted monthly.
